Matt Matsuda, my father, grew up in the San Fernando Valley farming. After WWII he relocated to Chicago and it was there he decided he wanted to pursue a career other than farming.
In 1945, he enrolled in a local trade school. A watch-making course that he wanted to attend was full so instead he signed up for a jewelry course offered by the school. After six months of school work with his new found passion for jewelry, he graduated and went on to work for a local repair shop.
At the repair shop he worked diligently and in one year he was offered a job as a platinum smith. He worked in the jewelry industry in Chicago until 1956, when he decided to move his family to San Diego. Matt worked for Ed Benjamin in San Diego for one year and in 1957, he started his own trade shop servicing most of San Diego's jewelry stores.
As for myself, after taking what turned out to be a life long sabbatical from college I started working with my parents in 1980. In 1981, I graduated from the Ray Schow School of Diamond Setting in Portland, Oregon. I came back to San Diego where I apprenticed with Paris Von Rabenau
for one year. In 1982, I attended the Gemological Institute of America where I received my Diamond Certificate. In 1986,I returned to GIA and received my Jewelry Design Certificate.
Today, I carry on the family tradition of servicing San Diego's fine jewelry needs.
